Transcripts of field notes for previously unsurveyed islands and lakes, 1868-1891.

Surveys of previously unsurveyed islands and lakes were conducted under the supervision of the Surveyor General. Field notes transcripts for these surveys were then forwarded to the State of Illinois. Transcripts include appointment dates; field assistant names (i.e., flagmen; chain carriers; compassmen); shoreline meander line and natural feature descriptions; distances; direction notes; field notes certification date by Surveyor General; and certification date.

Federal land surveys in Illinois were authorized by Congressional act (March 26, 1804), when the U. S. Surveyor General was given jurisdiction over all public land north of the Ohio and east of the Mississippi Rivers.
